A Surgeon Parents Can Trust

Dr. Eric Lichtenstein is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist with over 25 years of surgical experience. He has performed thousands of eye muscle surgeries on children of all ages—from infants to teens—and is trusted by pediatricians and families throughout Queens, Nassau County, and beyond. What sets Dr. Lichtenstein apart isn’t just his technical skill; his calm, communicative approach and sense of humor put kids and parents at ease.

What Is Eye Muscle Surgery?

Eye muscle surgery adjusts the action of one or more of the muscles around the eye in order to improve eye alignment and movement.

It’s most commonly used to treat the following:

  • Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)
  • Nystagmus (involuntary eye shaking)
  • Double vision
  • Abnormal Head Positions due to strabismus or nystagmus

Eye muscle surgery can dramatically improve both visual function and appearance, eliminate double vision, improve comfort, and enhance self-esteem.

“I [have] been taking my daughter to Eric Lichtenstein since 2013; she’s 3 yrs old. What I can say about him is he really cares for the kids that walk thru his doors; he makes you feel super comfortable and always makes my daughter laugh and smile. My daughter had two surgery procedures by him. At first, me and my husband [were] very worried about her going through her first surgery at a young age. This was the first time that any one of our kids had to have any surgeries done, but all the fear went out the window once Dr. Eric Lichtenstein explained every part of it and made us feel so comfortable, even when I was crying when she had to be put to sleep. So when it was time for another surgery, we knew she was in good hands. I will rate his professionalism at 100%, and I will highly recommend anyone to take your children to him; he is by far a genuine person and takes his work very serious. My daughter is healing very well and is able to look at life a whole lot stronger than before. Thank you, Dr. Eric Lichtenstein.”

Why Do Children Need Eye Muscle Surgery?

In some situations, strabismus can be managed with glasses or other non-surgical treatments. But when non-surgical therapies don’t resolve the issue, or the misalignment is marked, surgery may be the most effective option.

What to Expect From Eye Muscle Surgery Queens & Nassau County

Eye muscle surgery is typically done on an outpatient basis, meaning your child can go home the same day. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and most surgeries take about an hour.

Before Surgery

We’ll perform a complete exam and discuss your child’s symptoms, vision goals, and medical history. You’ll have time to ask questions and understand the treatment plan.

During Surgery

Dr. Lichtenstein will make a small incision in the tissue covering the eye to reach the muscles. He will then reposition or adjust one or more muscles to improve alignment.

After Surgery

Most people describe a dry/gritty feeling and perhaps mild soreness for a few days. Discomfort is typically well-managed with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication.

Follow-Up Care You Can Count On

We schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing, track your child’s progress, and ensure the eyes are responding as expected. Most children return to school or normal activities within a week, and in many cases, improvements in eye alignment are noticeable almost right away.
