Complex Strabismus
Luigi was noted to have an abnormal eye movement shortly after birth. He visited Dr. Lichtenstein at the age of 12 months and was diagnosed with Duane syndrome of the left eye. When he checked in as a 2 year old, he was noted to have a face turn towards the left. By the age of 5, the face turn was rather pronounced and surgery was an option. In the operating room, Dr. Lichtenstein moved the left superior rectus to near the lateral rectus (this improved the rotation a bit) and weakened the left medial rectus (because it was tight). After surgery, the head position was normal and the eyes were straight when looking straight ahead. Because Duane syndrome is the result of an abnormal nerve supply, it can be improved but not cured. Luigi is doing well 7 years after surgery, and is taller than his surgeon (not a side effect of surgery).
