Which Eyelid Bumps Are Common in Kids?

Children can develop several types of eyelid bumps—some harmless, others that may require treatment. Here’s a guide to the most common types Dr. Lichtenstein sees and treats.

Milia

Milia are tiny white or yellow cysts that form under the skin when keratin becomes trapped. They often appear on newborns' cheeks and eyelids and are painless and not contagious. Most resolve on their own, but removal may be considered if persistent or bothersome.

Chalazion

A chalazion is a firm, painless cyst under the skin that forms when a specialized oil gland within the eyelid (Meibomian gland) becomes blocked. These can appear anywhere along the eyelid and some take weeks or many months to resolve on their own.  Some do not resolve on their own, at all. Hot compresses early on can help, though large or chronic chalazia may require surgery for resolution.

Stye (Hordeolum)

A stye is a red, tender bump along the eyelid margin, caused by a bacterial infection in an oil gland or eyelash follicle. It may look like a pimple and be accompanied by swelling or tearing. Many resolve with warm compresses, but some need antibiotics or drainage.

Molluscum Contagiosum

This viral skin infection causes small, dome-shaped bumps that often have a central dimple. It commonly appears near the eyelids and can spread through skin contact. While it may clear on its own, treatment is sometimes needed to prevent eye irritation or further spread.

Inclusion Cyst (Epidermal Cyst)

An inclusion cyst is a smooth, round lump beneath the skin formed from trapped skin cells. These cysts are not painful or harmful and may grow slowly. They can be removed if they become bothersome or affect eyelid function.

Pilomatricoma

A pilomatricoma (or pilomatrixoma) is a non-cancerous (benign) skin tumor that arises from hair follicles, typically presenting as a small, firm, hard lump under the skin.  Their edges may even feel sharp.  Some children say these are "uncomfortable."   Treatment and diagnosis confirmation is by surgical excision (removal of the whole lesion) and evaluation by a pathologist.

When to See a Pediatric Eye Specialist

Most eyelid bumps are harmless, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. If your child’s lump changes in size, color, or texture—or if it’s bothering them—it’s worth having it checked out. Dr. Lichtenstein takes every concern seriously and offers gentle, age-appropriate care to help your child feel better, fast. Whatever the cause, you’ll receive clear answers and a logical treatment plan.

Gentle Care for Delicate Eyes

Our goal isn’t just to treat the bump—it’s to make your child’s visit as comfortable as possible. From babies to teenagers, we meet kids where they are and talk them through each step. We’ll explain your options in plain language, offer guidance based on years of pediatric experience, and create a care plan that respects your concerns. You’ll never feel rushed or pressured—just supported.

FAQ Miscellaneous Lumps & Bumps

Can eye bumps affect my child’s vision?

They can, especially if they press on the eye or block part of the pupil. Most small bumps don’t affect vision.

Do eyelid bumps hurt?

Some, like styes, can be tender or painful, while others, like chalazia or milia, are usually painless.

Are eyelid bumps contagious?

Some are. For example, molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus and can spread through contact. Others, like chalazia, are not contagious.

Can allergies cause eyelid swelling or bumps?

Yes. Allergic reactions can lead to puffy or itchy eyelids, though they typically don’t cause firm lumps like cysts or styes.
