What Is a Dermoid Cyst?

A dermoid cyst is a collection of normal tissue growing in an abnormal location. These are not cancerous. Dermoids most often appear around or within the upper eyelid toward the ear side (temporal), but can also be found toward the nose (nasal) or even on the eye itself (epibulbar or limbal). These benign growths are semi-solid or firm, have a smooth surface, and are often attached to bone. Inside, they contain skin cells, hair, and oil. Aside from appearance, the main concern is that if a dermoid ruptures, its contents can trigger severe inflammation beneath the skin, which may result in noticeable scarring.

When Is Imaging Indicated?

Imaging is generally unnecessary if the cyst looks typical and is located in a common area. However, if there is any uncertainty about the diagnosis or concern about the cyst’s depth, imaging can help guide treatment planning.

Can a Dermoid Cyst Affect Vision?

Vision loss from a dermoid is uncommon. The greater risk comes if the cyst ruptures, usually from trauma, causing a strong inflammatory reaction under the skin. This can create an environment for infection and lead to problematic scarring.

How Do Dermoid Cysts Affect Children?

Dermoid cysts are benign growths present at birth that gradually enlarge over time. When located around or on the eye’s surface, they can become noticeable, leading to cosmetic concerns. Sometimes, they may affect a child’s appearance enough to impact self-esteem.

Dermoid Cyst Removal (Excision) in Queens & Nassau County

Surgical excision is recommended to prevent the inflammatory reaction that can follow a rupture. This is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. The removed cyst is sent for biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Dr. Lichtenstein makes the smallest functional incision possible, placing it within the eyelid crease or a natural skin fold above or below the eyebrow whenever possible for the best cosmetic result.

What to Expect After Surgery

A follow-up visit is scheduled about a week after surgery to check the incision and ensure proper healing. The skin in this area typically heals very well. If surgery is not chosen, the cyst will be monitored with annual evaluations.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

Early evaluation and treatment can help prevent growth, rupture, and potential complications. When surgery is advised, the goal is to minimize discomfort while achieving the most natural cosmetic outcome for your child.

At-Home Care Tips

  • Keep the incision area clean and dry
  • Gently apply any prescribed ointment as directed
  • Remind your child not to rub or scratch the area
  • Watch for unusual redness, swelling, or discharge, and call if you’re concerned
  • Attend all follow-up appointments for the best outcome

FAQ Dermoid

What are the risks of infant dermoid cyst removal in Queens and Nassau County?

Every surgery has risks and benefits. The risks of this surgery are infection, bleeding, scarring, and a very minimal chance of recurrence. The likelihood of vision loss is extremely low, but any surgery on or around the eye has this risk. Dr. Lichtenstein will explain these risks and how they’re managed before surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

Most dermoid cyst removals take less than an hour and are done under general anesthesia. Children go home the same day.

Will my child have stitches?

Yes, a few small stitches are usually needed. In many cases, they dissolve on their own and don’t need to be removed.

How soon can my child get back to normal activities?

Most children are back to school or playtime within a few days. Bruising and swelling fade quickly, and discomfort is typically mild.

Can a dermoid cyst come back?

Very rarely. If the outer portion of the cyst is not removed in its entirety, a new cyst could form. Once the cyst is removed, it is inspected to ensure that the whole thing came out. If not, Dr. Lichtenstein goes back to work to make sure everything is taken care of.
