Exotropia Surgery: Week 1 vs. Week 2

Teddy had exotropia before surgery. Five days after surgery, he demonstrated a small intentional overcorrection, known as consecutive esotropia. By the second postoperative week, the overcorrection had resolved spontaneously and his eyes were well aligned. This sequence demonstrates an important principle of exotropia surgery: the surgical procedure changes the position of the eye muscles, but the brain ultimately determines alignment. An eye position that appears "too crossed" during the first week is often part of the path toward a successful long-term result.
