Exotropia
Nikki:
Nikki experienced vision loss in her left eye following a childhood injury, a condition that can often leads to strabismus as the brain ignores the eye with bad vision. In her case, this resulted in exotropia, or an outward turning of the eye, which impacted both her appearance and self-confidence.
To address this, Nikki underwent a 20-minute strabismus surgery to realign the eye. The initial results were successful, significantly improving eye positioning. However, due to the underlying vision impairment, her eye developed a vertical drift over time. A second procedure was performed to correct this, resulting in a well-aligned outcome.
Strabismus associated with vision loss can be more complex to treat with each procedure carrying an estimated 50% chance of long-term stability. Nikki’s case highlights both the challenges and the possibilities of corrective eye muscle surgery. She continues to do well post-treatment and the team led by Dr. Eric Lichtenstein is available should she need them.
